GREAT MARLBOROUGH STREET, LONDON
This street was constructed just after John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, had led the English to victory against the French at the Battle of Blenheim in 1704 during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701â14), and was named after him in celebration.
PORTOBELLO ROAD, LONDON
Home to the worldâs largest antiques market, attracting visitors from all over the globe. Originally Porto Bello Lane, it takes its name from Porto Bello Farm, which was built in 1740 and was named after a famous victory in 1739, when the Royal Navy under Admiral Vernon captured the port of Portobelo in Central America from the Spanish during the War of Jenkinsâ Ear (1739â48). This was the occasion that âRule Britanniaâ was written to celebrate and many places were named in its honour, including the suburb of Portobello in Edinburgh. Porto Bello Lane, which ran through farmland, was eventually renamed Portobello Road when the area became developed during the second half of the nineteenth century. Admiral Vernon is remembered by Vernon Yard, which runs off Portobello Road. The road found further fame in the 1999 film Notting Hill as the location for the Travel Book Company run by the lead character William Thacker, played by Hugh Grant.
